It was so for me at least - the idea of Asians speaking English natively was very strange idea. My view is that Asian Westerners just does not exist in our mental recognition, as if you guys do not exist. This is based off of my assumption so this needs a check though. I agree for the most part, but the difference I'm trying to draw out here is that, Europeans won't complain the same thing about Hollywood while we do. He is navigating a space that no other Asian man has before (as a Marvel lead alongside A-list actors) and bad-faith critics (and even well-meaning ones who unknowingly harbor bias) feel a need to take him down a peg.Įdit: I wasn’t aware which sub I was in - apologies if I was sounding like I’m trying to teach you guys who you are, which is the last thing I want to do. After a while, it does get annoying every time Simu reminds his audience that he's a superhero, or can do a backflip, but again, I believe he's being subjected to a double standard in which his personality would be described in more positive terms (such as 'confident', 'suave', and 'full of swagger') if he were white. The only criticism I would perhaps entertain is the arrogance. Simu does not apologize for being an Asian man taking up space in the public square, and some people just don't react well to that. Unfortunately, this raises the ire of those folks who are not accustomed to that sort of representation, and so are hostile towards him and eager to nitpick any fault they can perceive. Simu has gone out of his way to try to present himself as the opposite of the common negative stereotypes of Asian men in western society (unathletic, soft-spoken, asexual, etc), and I would say he's been pretty successful. His outspokenness on issues of Asian male emasculation and erasure in media and society serves as an inconvenient truth that most people, even some Asians, don't want to acknowledge or confront. It was not an insult towards the lgbt community, despite so-called 'allies' trying to elicit outrage to further their own agenda. As a gay man, the thread he allegedly posted came across to me as thoughtful, compassionate, and complex. The whole gay/pedophile reddit thing was deliberately blown out of proportion by an Asian twitter user around the time Shang-Chi was released, and was subsequently taken out of context eagerly by others. And this includes a lot of unknowingly self-hating Asian people too. The more insidious critics I believe are those with implicit biases against Asian males, and as you implied, direct a special kind of vitriol towards them than they would towards a non-Asian actor with the same talent and personality. I don't take this kind of 'criticism' seriously and refuse to give it the time of day. The 'ugly' criticism comes from mostly Chinese mainlanders who, let's face it, have a hard time looking past the surface-level in hollywood. It comes from multiple directions and I think 90% of it is unwarranted. r/abcdesis /r/asianamericanissues /r/asianbros /r/asiancelebs /r/asianfeminism /r/asianparentstories /r/asiantwox /r/asian /r/gaypoc /r/hipsterracism /r/mixedrace /r/racism
